Reserve Deputies from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office will perform periodic checks of your property while it is unoccupied for extended periods of time through its Home Check Program. Visual checks will be conducted of the exterior of your house and outbuildings to ensure that these structures remain intact. Whenever a Home Check reveals something suspicious, Reserve Deputies will secure the area as much as possible and have paid Deputies dispatched to investigate further. Home Checks will be performed as staffing allows with the goal of checking the home at least twice a month.
Reserve Deputies will be driving Custer County Sheriff patrol vehicles and be wearing uniforms that clearly identify them as Custer County Deputies. The Home Check Program is a service that could not be offered by the Custer County Sheriff’s Office without the assistance of the unpaid Reserve Deputy Force. Although there is no cost associated with the Home Check Program, any donations made to the Reserve Deputy Program would be greatly appreciated. Donations are used to secure uniforms, equipment and training for the volunteer Reserve Deputies.
The Home Check Program is available to residents of Custer County who have residential property that will be unoccupied for an extended period of time. As general rule, the property will be unoccupied for at least a three weeks but no more than nine months. The program is for residential properties only. The property must be within a 10 mile driving distance from downtown Custer. Properties outside the 10 mile driving distance will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The access to the property must have winter maintenance performed. Previous applicants will have first priority for acceptance. Business locations, rental properties, vacant properties, homes for sale and homes with a house sitter, other guest(s) staying in the home, or neighbors, and friends checking the condition of the home are not eligible.
